Kotieläinrakennusten lattiat - opas hyvän lattian tekoon

Concrete is the most used material for floors in animal houses. Floors are usually casted at site. Casting requires good craftsmanship because of high quality standards. The environment in side animal houses is demanding. Different kinds of acids are hazardous for concrete because of it's alkalinity. Corrosion of concrete can be counteracted by using additives in the mixture, concrete of higher strength or different kinds of coatings. In addition to chemical attack floors in animal houses have to stand up to mechanical stress. Besides these surface properties are very important parts of floors because of slippery or too rough floor surfaces which may cause lesions for animals. Also floors difficult to clean properly may cause disease problems. An ideal floor has different surface treatments on different areas. It is possible to mix concrete on site only for structures of class 3 like footings and lower layers of floors. Mixing concrete for floor surfaces on site is not possible. Concrete shall meet the requirements set according to the environment in side animal houses. In concrete standards floors in animal houses belong according to carbonation to class XC2 and according to chemical stress to class XA1. Minimum strength required is 40 MPa. Aggregate used to floor concrete should be rounded instead of crushed material. Casting process of concrete floor is a multiphased job starting with acceptance of concrete mixture and ending to curing of the whole structure. Uniform quality of concrete and uniform thickness of structure is possible to achieve with careful placing. Curing of concrete is beside the quality of concrete mixture the most important factor affecting the success of floor casting. Precuring has to be started as soon as the concrete is grouted and after treatment has to continue immediately after floating. Different kinds of surface treatments are able to prevent corrosion of concrete and to elon-gate the service life of concrete floor. Friction and roughness of floors can be adjusted with different kinds of coatings. Also easy-to-clean surfaces can be achieved. Plastic coatings used on areas for animals must always be roughened because plain plastic surfaces are too slippery. The materials used for roughening must be rounded e.g. sand or small glass balls. As new concrete floors are alkaline the surface treatment materials used have to stand up to alkalinity. For instance two component epoxy or polyurethane mixtures are suitable. Floor surface treatments are often grouped to paints, coatings or masses according to the film thickness formed. The life cycle of the surface treatment is comparable to the film thickness. Coatings are estimated to stand up the demanding environment in animal houses for 2-3 years and thicker masses for about 10 years.
