Because of the international and national changes individuality is topical issue in housing services for intellectually disabled persons. In Oulu, housing unit for intellectually disabled persons is changing from helped housing to individually guided housing.

The objective of our study was to get information about clients’ current experiences on the realization of individuality in living everyday life and in housing services.

The study was conducted as a case study. The material was gathered in the summer of 2015. We interviewed ten clients. The study was implemented by questionnaire. All questions were open-ended. The survey results were analyzed by inductive thematizing and by calculating frequencies.

The study showed that most of the clients could make decisions about their own lives. On the other hand, some clients could not make those decisions even though they wanted to. Most of the clients felt they got enough support when they need it and their opinions were taken into account in housing services. Some of the clients could not affect their service plan.

According to the clients’ experiences, individuality is mostly realized in the everyday living. Individuality is not realized in every things of every clients’ though. In housing services development is needed when planning the services. By developing works methods it could be possible to improve the realization of individuality in customers’ everyday life and housing services.
