The purpose in this thesis is to make game demo, which is used to study how gamification can be employed in learning. The client is Oulu University of Applied Sciences and supervisor is Pekka Ojala, a senior lecturer.

The theory section contains a short presentation of what motivating studies through game is and the concepts related to that. These concepts are edutainment (designing content to simultane-ously entertain and educate) and gamification (application of game-design elements in other con-texts). After that a brief overview is included of the concepts of game development and video game.

In the practical part a game demo is made according to the wishes and suggestions of the client. The idea of the game is that students, after completing a task given by teacher, get a password that lets them to proceed in the game. In the game demo made during the thesis process, a play-er is in a labyrinth where the player goes through doors that are opened by entering passwords. However, it turned out that there already are games to be used to motivate students.
