Chromakey is a special effect and post-production technique used in video production. Basically, you can remove the background from the video and replace it with a different video, a still photo or a virtual environment. Nowadays chromakey technique is a basic tool to filmmakers from low budget amateur productions to big Hollywood studios.

In this thesis the goal was to deal with how chromakey technique works in practice. The perspective was to look into the workflow behind the process from pre- to post-production and define common mistakes which beginners usually make. In this work there are also sections dealing with the history of chromakey, necessary video equipment and post-production. As source material were used literature from video production industry and my own personal experience during the music video production of the band Snowreport.

Chromakey technique is practically quite straightforward to use if you know what you are doing. However, it will become much more complex at the post-production phase when creating a believable composition. During the post-production of Snowreport music video I learned that the actual keying process is mainly a routine-like repeat if the video footage is of good quality. It is hard and sometimes impossible to pull out clean key from poor shot footage. A good planning of a video shoot and awareness of final background material will make the post-production a lot easier and will improve the quality of the work.
