Nuoruusiän ahdistuneisuushäiriöt ja niiden lääkkeettömät hoitomenetelmät

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental disorders among adolescents. They are often difficult to identify, which results in the fact that adolescents may lack proper evaluation, diagnosing, and treatment. However, without treatment anxiety disorders may become chronic, which, in turn, may hinder the overall psychological development of the person.

The purpose of this thesis is to give a description of anxiety disorders, as well as to chart various non-pharmacological treatments for them. The main objective of the thesis is to gather reliable information and research results that can be utilized in the treatment and counselling of clinically anxious adolescents. This thesis is aimed as a tool for health care professionals and for everyone who works with adolescents.

The research method chosen for this thesis is descriptive literature review, and the collected data were analyzed by means of qualitative analysis. The material (literature, articles, research results) used in this thesis are all from the period of 2005–2015. The research results are collected from the following data bases: EBSCO (cinahl), Medic, and Melinda.

The results show that among non-pharmacological treatment methods, those that are based on cognitive behavioral therapy are particularly emphasized. These methods can be used by both psychotherapists and other (mental) health care professionals. For example, nurses can benefit greatly from non-pharmacological treatment methods after having been properly initiated into them. Furthermore, all the methods discussed above can be used in both individual and group treatment. Non-pharmacological treatment methods are discussed in more detail in the results section of this thesis.
