The transition towards using the National Archive of Health Information (Kanta) is becoming increasingly current in the optical industry. Kanta Services enable that patient records are kept safe in electronic form and clients can visit any healthcare service point they want. The systematic planning and continuity of treatment are then improved. In future, this means that the results of an eye examination, contact lens fitting and eye health examination are available in every optical retail store. Standardised data structures are utilised in recording the examination results. Standardised data structures are based on the good practices as recommended by the Ethical Council of Optometry.

Our thesis is ordered by Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The objective of our thesis was to design and execute an online course for optometry students of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The course contains information about Kanta and standardised data structures used in examination recording. The online course is meant for self-studying and to support learning. The purpose of our project is to improve students’ skills in using Kanta and give them the tools to use the system in working life.

In our theory, we discuss Kanta Services, the laws and ethics regarding opticians, standardised data structures and elements and quality criteria of an online course. The online course is carried out on a Moodle platform. We asked our classmates to pretest the course and give us feedback. With the feedback, we enhanced the usability and practicality of the course.

Overall the pretest group found the online course useful and extensive. After our graduation, the optometry teachers will be managing the course. They can use and edit it as the transition to Kanta progresses.
