Yleisterveyden vaikutukset silmiin : Tietopaketti opiskelijoille

During last years the role of optometrist in Finland has changed. Many optical stores have started to offer general eye health screening services to their customers. Since 2011 optometrists in Finland are allowed to use diagnostic drugs during an eye examination. The use of mydriatics enlarge patients' pupil size, which facilitates the posterior eye examination. Screening fundus images for potential general or eye diseases has become common practice. Therefore, the optometrist has to have a profound understanding about normal and abnormal findings. But it also important to point out, that the optometrist are not allowed to make a diagnose of any disease. For a diagnose a referral to an ophthalmologist is necessary.

The most important part of an eye examination is an anamnesis. The anamnesis tells a lot of patient's general health. As our thesis production we made a data packet. Packet is about how the most common diseases, smoking, drugs, pregnancy and allergies effects on the eyes. In the packet we are using medical terminology.

The content of reference book bases on well-recognised national and international literature, scientific publications and articles. For the user it is easy to look up what kind of eye symptoms are associated with general disease and health conditions. We believe, that this reference book could support the user, who is doing the evaluation of patients case histories.

The reference book has been made for optometry students of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. It should support their studies and Oulu UAS has right to use it for study purpose, but a general publication is prohibited
