Digitalization of learning calls for new kinds of learning materials and methods. New techniques and tools can be used to create helpful self-learning materials. The assignment was given by Oulu University of Applied Sciences, the Degree Programme in Biomedical Laboratory Science. The aim of the thesis was to produce quality e-learning material for students of biomedical laboratory science. The subject of the material was basics of cell biology. The purpose was to create a versatile, user friendly self-learning material which would also be used later as material for blended learning.

We began our qualitative research by studying the curriculum and learning objectives of the lecture course. We got acquainted with online learning pedagogy and using the Moodle learning platform. We searched for reliable source material in literature and internet. Our aim was to produce good theoretical material with clear pictures that clarify the content of cell biology. We also tried to activate the students with tasks and exams which also help to understand the entirety. The content also includes knowledge that will combine theory with our future working life. For quality control we collected feedback of the material and the learning environment from the student who used the platform.

The result of the work was a good quality, versatile and clear learning material which was introduced to students in autumn 2017. The collected feedback was positive, and many students felt our material was very useful. Very little changes were made after analyzing the feedback survey.

The study material will be used in the teaching of cell biology. Students of biomedical science will continue to benefit from the new platform and material. The material is to be used in self-learning and blended learning. In the future, the material and the platform are easy to modify and update.
