This thesis explores how to get young people organize their own events in library, what kind of framework library could offer for their events and how library could support youth participation in organizing events. The result of the study is a guide for the commissioner, children and youth services of the Oulu city library. The thesis originated from the need for the Oulu city library for this guide and the author’s interest in youth library work and organizing events.

In this qualitative thesis theme interviews were used as the research method. For the study, youngsters between 11–16 years from Oulunsalo, and Oulunsalo congregation and youth centre employees were interviewed. For this study, the initial plan was to use case study as a research method but due to lack of time it was left out. The theoretical background deals with organizing events in general and in library field and young people as members of society and library customers.

Young people are interested in organizing events and they want to plan their own events freely with each other in familiar groups. Nevertheless, youngsters need assistance and support from adults. Instagram is the best channel for marketing and it is good to use sponsored ads which will reach as many young people as possible. Within possibilities, it is also good to use schools as a marketing channel. It is necessary to create an informal and easily accessible library environment. As an expression of gratitude to thank young people for organizing events, they should be given for example references.

As a conclusion, it can be noted that young people like organizing events and they have several ideas. However, first they need to get excited about the event and it must be marketed for them well in advance. The thesis results also offer ideas of what kind of events can be organized with young people and for them. The Interviewed youngsters were most excited about murder mysteries. Searching for a group of young people for organizing events it is wise start by getting in touch with different groups. It is best to start about half year before the planned event. Autumn is the best season to contact because this is when society groups plan their own activities. Ideas for events and planning assistance can be enquired from other organizations such as youth centers.
