Objective of this thesis was to implement the communication between IEEE 802.15.4 standard based ZigBee network and larger data networks by using GSM technology. This enabled for example the measurement data transfer from sensor network to over long distances and the develop of wireless remote management applications using battery-operated devices.

Communication between devices were achieved by using development hardware and software made by Matrix Multimedia, AVR microcontroller made by Atmel and Nokia 12i GSM module what was connected to Nokia 1CQ GSM test board.

The thesis resulted in a successful prototype connection between devices and to develop software that allowed the AVR microcontroller to communicate with the GSM module. This work is attached to Lasse Mäkelä’s thesis named Sensor Network of Frost Alarm System.
