This thesis was commissioned by Outokumpu Stainless Oy for their cold rolling mill 1, annealing and pickling line 2. The subject was to develop the use of the ceramic bracket rolls of AP-lines. The purpose of this thesis was to explore packing methods of ceramic bracket rolls. The aim was to improve the durability of ceramic bracket rolls by developing the packing methods. The other aim was to reduce quality fluctuations.

Bracket rolls are packed with ceramic fiber discs by Tormets Oy and then rolls are carried to Outokumpu. There are two providers of discs for AP 2 line and they are Japanese Sojitz and German Frenzelit. Tests were performed by changing packaging methods both the manufacturers and then the were compared with each other as well as with the old packaging methods. In addition, some annealing tests were performed for the discs in laboratories changes in the material were monitored.

As a results the duration of the bracket rollers was not yet improved but the variability decreased. The conclusions from the examinations were visualised in graph to detect impacts from the packaging methods. Additional tests will certainly show the improvement with the developed packaging method. When the results of the annealing tests were compared, the biggest difference was detected in the thickness. The thickness decreased more with Sojitz than Frenzelit.
