According to the national survey of the national passenger traffic, most of the mobility on ways to work and school were travelled with private car during the years 2004–2005. Most of the greenhouse emissions formed from road traffic is caused by private cars. The attention should be thus given to alone motoring in reducing of emissions. If the amount of the greenhouse emissions would decrease enough, it would slow down the global warming. In Finland the consequence of the global warming is among others shortening of the snow cover time, which has an influence for example on the success of the wintering organisms.

The purpose of this thesis was to examine the modes of mobility on way to work and school in Oulu University of Applied Sciences in the School of Renewable Natural Resources. Survey was related to students and staff of the school. The modes of travel were examined with electronic questioning, which was carried out in March 2011. The client of this thesis was project called Developing environmental activities in Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

The results of questioning showed that the main mode of travel among the students was the public transport and among the staff private driving. The most imposing thing in choosing modes of mobility was suitability of the schedules and lines of the public service vehicle. Above-mentioned schedule and line matter got also the major support in question about changing the modes of travel in more ecological direction. Taking care of respondents own physical condition did not get much encouragement when choosing the ways of travel.

Environmental hazards developed from private car driving are significant. Therefore the students and staff in the School of Renewable Natural Resources should be advised to use more public transport, car pool and teleworking in the future. These preceding matters are the main things in decreasing emissions which consist of mobility on way to work and school.
