The life cycle of the second generation GSM networks has prolonged much further than originally anticipated and is set to continue for the foreseeable future. As a result, it is required that third generation WCMDA and fourth generation LTE networks are located in the same frequency bands with GSM. This has caused an increase in the need to perform frequency planning in the base station development phase as well as in network planning.

The objective of this thesis was to develop a Windows Phone application which could be used for frequency and channel number conversions between different network technologies. It can also be used to perform conversions between typical radio technology units, such as RF power (dBm, W), Return Loss and VSWR as well as to provide a cumulative total for logarithmic dBm power values.

GSM, WCDMA and LTE mobile network standards are public and developed and maintained by 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project), a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations. The 3GPP standards played a key role in this thesis. In addition, Microsoft development tools, litera-ture, information available in the internet and my own experiences in base station research and development were used as a basis for this thesis. As an end result, a Windows Phone application ARFCN Calculator was developed which can be downloaded from Windows Market Place.
