Breastfeeding is the easiest, cheapest and cleanest way to feed a newborn. Breastfeeding does not always happen instinctively. This is why mothers need quality breastfeeding guidance. Too scarce resources are a big challenge to quality and sufficient breastfeeding.

The main target was to produce a breastfeeding guidance film for the antenatal clinic in Kempele. The target of the film was to diversify breastfeeding guidance. The long term target is to have confident breastfeeding mothers.

The data of the film is based on national directives and guidelines. During the production of the film it was important to explore video making literature. With the help of the film manuscript the video material was shot, recorded and edited. The main focuses of the film were breastfeeding positions and newborns’ latch-on. The film was evaluated by the public health nurses and the clients of the antenatal clinic of Kempele.

The nurses and clients rated usability, understandability, informative aspects and the quality of the pictures and sound. The film was rated as a good guidance film for basic and successful breastfeeding.

The film will be used in the parents’ training by public health nurses. In future it would be important to examine how the film could be used as guidance material in breastfeeding. There is also a need to have breastfeeding guidance material in foreign languages.
