The subject of the thesis was to renew Codemate Ltd’s internet site. The site was already responsive and different mobile versions for each device were not required because of the simplicity of the page. The main focus was to improve the usability especially on mobile devices because the old site didn’t create the same kind of user experience for mobile users as it did for the desktop users. Even though Codemate’s internet site has more desktop visits and just few mobile visits monthly, mobile first approach was selected. It has huge advantages even though the site is rarely visited on mobile devices. In the future the number of mobile devices probably continues to grow so this may be reflected as increased number of visits to the company’s site.

Responsive design and mobile first principle are studied in this thesis. The author of the thesis was interested in examining the mobile first principle in more detail because before the thesis the opinion about this principle was really contradictory. In addition, one of the goals was to expand knowledge about user experience and usability combined with responsive design.

At the beginning of the process, a questionnaire on the old site was conducted in order to find the parts that needed to be updated and those which should be kept unchanged. A new site was redesigned on the basis of the results. Students conducted a scenario-based testing as an exercise when the site was almost finished. Some small changes were made according to the test results. After these changes the users re-commissioned the questionnaire. 95% of the users agreed that the redesigned site is better than the previous one.

All the goals set for the thesis were reached. Now the company has a new internet site which got good reviews and proper testing with a wide variety of devices. A lot was learnt about responsive design and especially about mobile first principles. Knowledge about usability and the importance of testing was gained. There was also a chance to get to know different testing methods. The study increased interest in user experience and usability especially how they are studied in multi device environments.
