Peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) infections are fairly common. Up to 81% of hospital patients have ja PIVC inserted. The topic of this thesis is necessary as approximately every other patient has a PIVC inserted during their hospitalization and 51% catheter transmitted bacteremias are caused by peripheral intravenous catheters.

The purpose of this thesis was to describe what kind of scientific information is found from different databases about the significance of hand hygiene in the prevention of PIVC infections. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview of the subject, which will contribute to the prevention of PIVC infections.

The literature review shows that effective hand hygiene plays a crucial role in the fight against PIVC infections. Preventing PIVC infections is supported by aseptic working methods and monitoring infections. In addition, regular and goal-oriented staff training is a key factor in enhancing the fight against infections.
