The subject of the thesis was to develop, design and implement secure and modern data communications for remote monitoring system of Caverion Suomi Oy, Oulu. The monitoring system introduced in thesis includes building automation, access control and security systems.

The aim was to update the present system to more secure, flexible and cost-effective system, which has fewer external service providers and easier maintenance. The main emphasis was put on security so the project was planned in perspective of secure connections between equipment and end-user.

Thesis discusses the system requirements of data communications for electrical building service equipment from the viewpoint of security and usability. The theoretical part examines generally the security problems and risks of current electrical building systems and also in future perspective. Thesis covers through the selection criteria and introduction of updated equipment and follows the progression of the project.
