The aim of this thesis was to study the role and use of the guitar as an accompanying instrument in a Cuban style of music called the son. This thesis also includes a short presentation of an indigenous Cuban string instrument, the tres, and its role in Cuban son.

The reason for choosing this particular topic was that it was difficult to find any information on this issue during my studies. According to my experience this subject is unfamiliar among Finnish guitarists and guitar instructors.

The study is based on non-Spanish literature dealing with Cuban music and a dialogue with Mr. Tero Toivanen, a Finnish musician specialized in Cuban music.

The objective has been to survey the historical background behind the musical and cultural development in Cuba as well as to study the Cuban son in overall and especially the role and use of the guitar in this specific style of music. Several examples have been presented in order to demonstrate the different variations of guitar accompaniment in Cuban son.

Hopefully, this thesis could work as an introduction to Cuban son as well as Cuban music in general to all guitarists interested in this style of music.
