Health care professionals have to able to perform vision screening trustworthy in order to make conclusions and comparisons based on the results. This way one can affect even child’s school reputation and enhance employees work efficiency as there is large amount of customers in school health care and occupational health care.

For this thesis we planned and executed lecture which consisted of theory and practical part. In the beginning of this project intention was to organize educational event for school health nurses but taking into consideration our thesis’s timetable this was not possible. Lecture was conducted on 9th of September 2015 at Seinäjoki’s University of Applied Sciences for students studying to be public health nurses. Practical part was based on the theory lesson. This theory lesson covered basic functions of human eye, refractive errors, strabismus, amblyopia, colour vision and presbyopia. These themes were selected based on earlier studies which showed that these subjects were desired by the school health nurses. Practical training consisted of measuring far and near visual acuity, examination of strabismus using Hirschberg lamptest and coveringtest. Colour vision was examinated by using Ishihara test.

The aim was to advance student’s abilities for performing vision screening. In addition they would understand better the results and methods behind vision screening. Project’s purpose was to produce an advanced lecture and educational material. Lecture was executed in co-operation with Seinäjoki’s University of Applied Sciences. Participants consisted of 40 students and three teachers.

Feedback in writing was collected at the end of the lecture and verbal feedback was also given by the students and teachers. Project’s success was assessed by these feedbacks. 92 percent of the students attending the lecture felt that the lecture improved their abilities for work life. Students perceived that lecture deepened their knowledge of vision and performing visual screening. Feedback given by teachers showed that they would like to continue our co-operation in the future. In their opinion the lecture was very valuable. In addition the lecture could be modified for purposes of different faculties. In the future Oulu University of Applied Sciences could productize this lecture by having their students lecturing this subject in other faculties.
