The subject of this study is topical because period of treatment are getting shorter and parents take care of the child pain more at home in future. Pain assessment in children can be challenging because small children have a limited vocabulary. The purpose of study was to describe of parent´s experiences of pain assessment and challenges of under seven years old child with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at home.

The aim of this study was to examine what kind of pain assessment method parents are using when assessing child´s pain at home and where parent´s need of guidance.

This thesis is qualitative study. Data was collected on open-ended questionnaire. Data was analyzed by using a qualitative content analysis. Ten parents were included in the study.

Results showed that challenges of pain assessment were identify of pain, assessment of pain amount, cause of pain and describe of pain location. The pain assessment method used by parent´s were child´s observe and asking pain.

Oulu University Hospital in Children´s and Adolescent´s Rheumatoid Clinic can developed to give guidance according to the study results for parent´s.
