The purpose of this thesis was to find out the effect of the Flash glucose monitoring system on diabetes therapy of pediatric patients. The aim was to improve commitment to care and to encourage the nurses to motivate children with type 1 diabetes and their families for self-care. The aim was also to get new research information about this topic, which has not been studied much yet.

The theoretical framework of the study consisted of Finnish and international studies , and also basic knowledge of the subject.The study was conducted using a quantitative method and the data was collected from Esko electronic patient health records. The data collection method was a retrospective inventory study and the material was collected and analysed by using the SPSS data program.

The findings of this study showed that the long-time use of a Flash glucose monitoring system has a positive effect on the patients’ balance of glucose levels. The HbA1c mean values of the children with type 1 diabetes having taken the Flash glucose monitoring system into use appeared to decline during the whole examination period. On the contrary, the HbA1c mean values of children in the control group seemed to increase during the same period of time. In this study, the number of scannings did not have any effect on the balance of glucose levels.

On the basis of these results, health care professionals could be encouraged to motivate patients, and those who are responsible for their care, to start long-term use of the Flash glucose monitoring system. Impaired metabolic control of diabetes increases the risk of macro- and microvascular diseases, and therefore taking care of the balance of glucose levels with the help of different self-care tools may bring socio economic advantages and good effects on the patients' quality of life in the long run. We suggest that in the future different cloud and online services could also be created and used between the visits at outpatient clinics, to improve treatment of pediatric diabetes.
