OMAISHOITAJA KESKIÖSSÄ : Suuntaa antava tutkimus omaishoitajien hyvinvoinnista

This thesis was made for the New Boost project managed by the registered association of Caregivers and Relatives of Ylivieska Subregion. The purpose of this study was to give indicative knowledge of the resources and wellbeing of caregivers and to find the areas, where caregivers need most support and guidance. The aim was that through this thesis and its results caregivers would understand better how important their own wellbeing is for having more strength to face the challenges of daily routine life. The study target group consisted of caregivers (about 18) who had applied to participate in Empowerment Days with their dependents. Each one of the caregivers replied to a resources -questionnaire (64 questions) given to them at the Empowerment Days. The questionnaire focused on the resources of caregivers and gathered information on the physical, psychical and social resources and wellbeing. In addition written and oral feedback material that caregivers gave on the Empowerment Days was used in the study. Clinical and physical tests made during the thesis period were also used as a method of gathering information. The clinical tests showed that obesity was the biggest problem among the caregivers. Blood pressure, blood tests and the caregivers´ functional capacity were on a surprisingly good level. Physical health condition was an issue that also came out in the resources questionnaire; caregivers have illnesses that need medical care as well as all kinds of musculoskeletal problems, sleeping problems and pain. Some of them have defects in nutrition. Despite of their hard and overwhelming caring work, they manage to do sports and have other versatile hobbies quite well. The respondents considered caregiving to be obligative and mentally more stressful than physically. Many things affect the hardness of caring work and that is why care givers feel they need supporting help from other people and different kinds of supporting services. They feel that they do not get enough respites and days off, and that there are no holiday resorts that would serve the needs of the dependent. As for the future, the caregivers considered the condition of the dependent, their own health and resources of caring work as the most worrying factors. As a conclusion, it can be said that caregivers need continuously preventive health care and follow-up methods to support their physical, psychical and social resources. They also need versatile, multi-professional information, guidance and support as well as peer support to take care of their holistic health and to have enough strength for the hard and demanding care giving work.
