With the ageing of the population more presbyopic workers use visual display terminals in their daily tasks. The efficiency of occupational vision can be improved by analyzing and improving visual ergonomics in the workplace and by developing solutions for presbyopic workers.

In this study we compared two different degression options of the Piiloset Office PD lens. The main purpose of the study was to find out which option suits better for the office and customer service environment. We also measured and compared the visual acuity in the binocular field with the both degression options of the lens.

In the theoretical part of the study we deal with presbyopia and its correction with spectacle lenses, such as the occupational progressive lenses. In addition, we describe the visual ergonomics in the workplace and introduce the lens used in this study.

Our test group consisted of five presbyopic office and customer service workers of an insurance company. They wore both lens options for two weeks in their daily work. We used both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The data was collected with the visual ergonomics measurements at the work place, eye examinations, visual acuity measurements in the binocular field, vision diaries and partially structured inquiries.

The lens option of bigger degression was found to be more suitable for the office and customer service work. However, informants’ experiences of the lenses were very individual.

With the binocular visual acuity measurements, we found no significant differences in the widths of usable binocular areas of vision between the two degression options. Also, the participants' experiences did not always correspond to the theory or measurement results. Thus, the most important foundation for the good spectacle correction is the listening to the customers and paying attention to their visual needs.
