Professionalism is very difficult to define and there have been several studies into the subject. The main challenge is, that professionalism and the perception of it is very much linked to the individual, his personality, values and believes as well as his surrounding society. Furthermore, one’s perception of professionalism is in constant flux as one gains experience and insight into the subject matter.

In this thesis nursing students’ perception of professionalism was investigated utilising Q- methodology, a research method combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The aim was to gain insight into what viewpoints of professionalism were most and least important in the eyes of the students. Three viewpoints emerged, the workplace problem solvers, the humane caregivers and the influencers and developers. The differences between these groups indicate, that there might be underlying variables affecting individuals’ perceptions.

Further studies are needed to deeper understand these differences and to be able to draw more generalised conclusions. It would also be of interest to investigate how the perceptions develop from nursing student to practicing nurse.
