5S methodology is a tool to organize and standardize production processes. The goal of the 5S methodology is to clarify production processes by defining necessary aspects in them and removing the unnecessary ones. With the 5S methodology, a company can improve its operations in various ways, such as by shortening the order to cash flow. The subject of the thesis was to plan and implement a 5S program to a company Kiviliike Heikkinen Oy. The implementation of 5S was limited to the production processes of stone worktops. At the beginning of the project, the company’s production premises included excessive material and the equipment needed in the manufacturing process did not have their own places. These problems lead to narrow work premises and inefficient production processes. The aim of the company was to enhance the worktop manufacturing by decreasing waste in the processes.

The thesis project was conducted by using a 5S program familiarized by Toyota. The program consisted of five different stages where only essential tools were kept and all excessive tools removed. Places of easy access were designed for the needed tools and the manufacturing area were thoroughly cleaned. Then, based on the aforementioned process, visualized standards were created. The standards acted as a foundation in maintaining and further constantly developing the manufacturing areas.

The standardization of the worktop production process was successful. A great amount of excessive material was removed, and practical, accessible places were designed for the tools. Furthermore, the general cleanliness level of the facilities improved notably. Due to these actions, floor space was increased, which could be utilized to create new intermediate storages and manufacturing areas. The new area allocation made the premises overall even more spacious improving the production flow.

As a consequence of the 5S program, job satisfaction has improved, and principles of the methodology have been applied even in other business areas of the company. Moreover, several business development opportunities have been established. To conclude, this successfully conducted 5S program can act as a basis for further development of the business.
