Thesis was commissioned by a software development and design company which has developed a map browser application that provides the user a variety of different maps and information of the surrounding environment to assist in outdoor and nature adventures. The commissioner of the thesis has identified a need to explore market opportunities outside of Finland. Sweden was chosen to be the market explored in the research. The thesis topic was to research Sweden as a market and conduct a competition analysis. The study aims to answer two questions. Firstly, to address the issue of whether there is a market opportunity for map browser application in Sweden. And secondly, find out what the case company’s market position is in relation to the competition. The thesis process begun with selecting strategic tools to explore the market and the competition and the chosen tools were Pestel and SWOT analyses. The empirical study was conducted by collecting already existing qualitative research materials. Material used for the research were webpages, blogs, articles, and customer reviews. The first focus was to find out relevant information of Sweden as a market using Pestel analysis. The second focus was to investigate the competition in the maps & navigation application market in Sweden by using SWOT analysis as an evaluation method to study the competitors in the market. The study showed that Sweden is an interesting market of entry, since it is double the size of the Finnish market where the commissioner already operates. The study also showed that Maps & Navigation application market in Sweden is highly competitive. However, the commissioner’s application could successfully operate there by affirming the strengths and weaknesses, and by exploiting the opportunities.
