Letterforms, the subject of my thesis, felt like a natural choice because of my personal interests. However, I tried to find a perspective to this subject that I hadn't run into before and that could give answers to the questions I was interested in. Choosing a multidisciplinary point of view was a challenge, because I had experience - both theoretical and practical - only on the other artform. On the other hand this arrangement gave me an open-minded perspective towards my thesis.

The reason I find comparing architecture and type design interesting is because of their similar purpose. Letters are the building blocks of information. They both have a carefully predetermined and stabile purpose. Both these forms of art are forced to evolve under extremely strict restrictions.

I begin my thesis by following the evolution of writing and architecture from the very beginning, and highlighting the historical events that had an affect on the development of these two. After that I chronologically scrutinize art styles in different eras and their appearance both in architecture and lettering. Based on my observations I state that in the early days, architecture and type design followed closely to the same idiom but when arriving to the 20th century they slowly started to split to make their own paths.
