The topic of this thesis was to design package labels for protein drink powders produced by Finnish Northforce Ltd. The aim was to design visually successful and consistent, functional and domestic looking series of labels. The work consisted of die (device for cutting into a specified shape) and visual design.

The research method used in this thesis was a combination of qualitative action research and describing case study. The starting point was a client facing a practical problem that needs to be solved.

The theoretical part – information about package design principles and package design process – was collected using English and Finnish package design literature, as well as official websites. Through the research process the theory was reflected to the empirical part and in this thesis I describe my own experiences, outputs and observations during the process.

The results of the survey indicates that it is possible to create a process model to assist design work. The final output of this thesis is a series of package labels and a description of the food package design process and its specific characteristics.

The cutting device model can be used later on as a base for other products. The client company can use created visual identity in their other product marketing material. The thesis can be used as an assistant material for graphic designers who seek for information about package design principles, methods and design process. A following research subject could be a marketing analysis or to find out which packaging related factors consumers find so valuable they would be ready to pay more to have them.
