A part of my normal work task was specified for the subject of this thesis. Work will continue after thesis. The aim of this thesis was to research properties and features of Nordic Semiconductors Bluetooth chip and analyze whether is it possible to use chip in future products of Polar Electro. Evaluation work was crucial for project schedules, because good knowledge of used components is very good help in project risk analysis. Bluetooth chip evaluating requires a lot of understanding about Bluetooth protocol. In evaluation work almost all test setups and programs are unique. So all tests were built independently for every purpose. Evaluation tasks were scheduled by priorities of the features. Most important features were evaluated first, because these can cause a rejection of the chip. Mainly all evaluation work was accomplished with Nordic Semiconductors evaluation kit and Bluetooth analyzer. Implementation of connectivity application started in the final stage of the thesis. With this application chip will be integrated into the Polar Electro’s product platform. Based on evaluation results BLE chip can be used in low cost products where feature requirements are not very complex. Chip is best suited for applications which have simple network topologies and do not need fast data transmission. If Nordic Semiconductor will release new updated BLE stacks for the chip, Polar can re-evaluate possible use cases. Possible software updates can fix issues which are preventing chip usage in its original use cases.
