The objective of the study was to find out postoperative care experiences of hernia patients treated in surgical ward of Raahe Hospital. The subject was ordered by the hospital. The aim was to provide information that the surgical ward is able to use to improve its operations.

Qualitative research method was used in the study. The research data was collected by an inquiry designed by the authors. The inquiry was incorporated by both multiple and open questions. The participants were hernia patients operated by the surgical ward of Raahe Hospital in spring 2015. The inquiry was carried out as a post survey.

The results occurred that the patients were mainly contented with the postoperative care and guidance. However, few wishes for improvement occurred from the responses. First, the patients requested preoperative guidance, and also, the information given needed to be organised so that it was easier to understand. The pain medications given to the patients were sufficient in the ward. However, some of the replies called for stronger medications for the postoperative care at home
