Nearsightedness is also known as Myopia. Myopia has developed to the level of an epidemic all over the world. The incidence of Myopia is increasing rapidly. Especially East-Asian countries such as Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai, and Malaysia are highly affected by myopia. It is estimated that by the year almost 2050 half of the world population are myopic and 10 % of the world population is estimated to be affected by high myopia. Myopia increases the risk for eyesight threatening diseases and visual impairment. Certain reasons for myopia development are still unknown. It is believed that myopia can be a cause of pathological and environmental factors or combination of them both. The eye can be axially elongated, one or more optical surfaces of the eye can be too steep or the refractive index of the light-refracting parts of the eye can be too high. Also, there can be structural or locational changes in the light-refracting parts of the eye. Luckily today there are ways to slow down the progression of myopia with myopia control. In myopia control there are varying kinds of contact lenses and eyeglass lenses available to slow down the progression of myopia by inhibiting peripheric hyperopic defocus in the eye. Also, medical substances, for example atropine, can be used to slow down the progression of myopia. Currently children’s eyesight in Finland is examined by Public Health Nurses in School Health Care when children are in the 1st, 5th and 8th grade. Public Health nurses play an important part as height growth development is recognized as the time when myopia progresses the fastest. We used a quantitive method in our research. A questionnaire was sent to all the Public Health Nurse students and their teachers in Oulu University of Applied Sciences. We used Webropol application to collect data electronically. In total we received 23 replies. The questionnaire consisted mostly of multiple-choice questions. We analyzed the data using the Webropol application. Results show that on the degree programme of the Public Health Nurses students in Oulu University of Applied Sciences there are not a lot of studies about myopia and the treatment methods. Most of the defendants felt that it would be very important for the Public Health Nurses to have information and know-how in myopia and its treatment methods.
