The Oulujoki graveyard has been inaugurated in 1908. At that time the passageways and paths started to take shape, as well as did the grave areas. The growing stock was not touched, except from removing the trees, that were growing on a planned path or a grave. Along with the graveyard area becoming larger afterwards, also the growing stock was renewed so that birch trees and aspens were planted in between the graves. The current condition of the growing stock has been observed for a few years already and it was determined to conduct a condition assessment and a renewal plan of the growing stock.

The purpose of this thesis is to detect as good renewal plan as possible for Oulujoki graveyard growing stock, more specifically, for departments 1–29. According to the wishes of the initiator of the thesis, the aim is to decrease the quantity of decidious trees and increase the quantity of coniferous trees. The initiator of the thesis was the funeral services of the Evangelic Lutheran parish of Oulu.

The theoretical background consists of literature concerning forestry and the material of forest companies. For the condition evaluation a condition assessment was conducted. The renewal that is most suitable for Oulujoki graveyard, is gradual light selective felling. Individual trees to be urgently removed, there were 65 pcs. Within trees to be urgently removed, the share of the decidious trees was greater than the share of the coniferous trees.

In renewal of the trees, the method being used, is mainly planting. The saplings to be chosen are about 100 cm of height. The growing is facilitated, amongst other things, by changing the substratum, by irrigation and supporting the trees.

Pinetree will be the most prevailing species of tree in the Oulujoki graveyard, with it being a natural species of tree in the graveyard area, as well as it is long lived and it has good resistance against various mechanical damages. In the future, firs can also be used to make the selection of species of trees more versatile. They suit well to locations, where canopy has no space to grow wide.
