The aim of this thesis work was to explore development options for a dairy farm and to choose the most profitable and most economical alternative. The commissioner was a dairy farm located in Siikajoki, The commissioner offered the different kinds of development options. The development options and their usefulness have been described in this thesis work. Profitability has been estimated through a CashManPro economy calculation program. The method in exploring development options was to utilise earlier study data on this subject. The planned development options were compared with experiences of corresponding development options carried out on other dairy farms. In addition, data based on interviews collected from a few agrarian entrepreneurs have been used. The two development options were compared with each other based on profitability, amount of work as well as investment costs regarding low invests cost. The conclusion based the results of this thesis is that the most profitable option is to continue with present investments and not to make any further investments. The present loans should be paid according to the payment plans. Feeding can be considered to be re-arranged so that the farms’ own animal feed would be utilised more effectively in for example in using grain. In future the sons of the farmer are possibly carrying on the farm, so when enlargement of the farm is actual, they could take part in the enlargement and get valuable information and workmanship from their farmer parents. It would be reasonable to consider the enlargement of the farm, when the process of the change of generation is to be started.
