The ever-changing nature of specialty sales requires businesses to develop their functions and stay competitive both in local and global markets. The development of enterprise resource planning software solutions allows businesses to more effectively manage their resources and utilize software solutions in everyday business functions. The commissioning company of this thesis is looking forward to find and implement suitable software solutions to help with their everyday business functions and with the goal of setting up an online store in future. The goal of this thesis is to provide grounds for business development that is likely to go beyond the academic process of the thesis. This is achieved through researching theory and practice of the business – studying and discussing the business theory related to the commissioning company and outlining and defining key business functions and processes and how they could be developed through of e-commerce solutions. The core background of the thesis is in business development and project planning. Business development projects require careful planning, understanding the business process as a whole along with insight on how the business can be developed. Business development is based on identifying growth opportunities for the company, acknowledging that developing e-commerce solutions can offer opportunities for growing the business and handling the business more efficiently. Theory of enterprise resource planning, sales and distribution, point of sale software, supply chain management, inventory management, and customer relationship management are discussed. The current situation of the business is researched, and analysed, areas for development are identified and requirements for business development are defined in co- operation with the commissioning company. Qualitative research is to be conducted in order to find possible software solutions and service providers. Possible software solutions are compared and analysed using the previous knowledge of areas of development and requirements that are set for the possible e-commerce solutions. Results are achieved through identifying key business processes and areas for development, listing out requirements for e-commerce solutions, finding out possible e-commerce vendors and comparing most suitable ones and recommending an e-commerce solution.
