Knowledge has become far more important and current while the importance of expertise and service has increased and because of continuous changes at work. Knowledge is also important in order to achieve the vision and the goals of the company in question. The increase of distribut-ed organisations and remote word also makes the topic of this study current.

This study was conducted for SMT and was designed to study how to improve knowledge sharing in a distributed work context. The aim was to explore collaborative informal learning at work and more specifically focusing on the every-day practices related to knowledge sharing in virtual team context. How virtual teams share knowledge at the moment and which are the facilitators and barriers for knowledge sharing. The purpose was to draw up development proposals for the company to facilitate knowledge sharing in a virtual organisation context.

This thesis adopted a single-case study approach. The study was qualitative and the data was collected by survey and interviewing. The problem was studied from the perspective of remote employees. Data was collected from remote employees aiming to understand the practices of knowledge sharing and potential facilitators and barriers. The interviews were analysed with qualitative content analysis, and the results and the development proposals were conducted based on the analysis and the theory of this thesis.

The findings showed that employees are very committed and related to the company, but the case-organization should pay more attention to equality, influence and management by change in order to contribute knowledge transfer. Knowledge sharing is supported by active communication, but more opportunities for conversations are required. The storage and usability of customer data should also be developed.

Based on the findings four practical development proposals are presented to support knowledge sharing and making tacit knowledge more explicit. The development proposals are to enable more dialogue and reflection, improve data storage, a change of sales objectives and starting new teams.
