As our bachelor’s thesis we produced a Moodle-based study material to be used during the microbiology study module. The client of the bachelor’s thesis was the degree programme of biomedical laboratory science at Oulu University of Applied Sciences. The bachelor’s thesis was produced together with NordLab Oulu Laboratories, with both the 24-hour-laboratory and the laboratory of microbiology.

The web study material deals with urinary tract infection and the causing bacteria (uropathogens) as well as the cultivation of bacteria in urine; how the cultivation is done and how growth on the cultivation media should be interpret after incubation. The study material focuses on chromogenic cultivation media, especially on CHROMagar Orientation media. At the end of the study material, there are some exercises for students to test their knowledge.

Our quality requirements for the study material were simplicity and understandability, as well as easy usage and the trait of being able to excite students to learn more. Our goal was to make a supporting study material to help students in their studies during the microbiology study module, and with the practical studies included in the microbiology study module. The study material can also be used when preparing for practice placements or summer jobs. As the study material is Moodle-based, it is easily adjustable for the changing needs of learning in the future. In the spring of 2017 we made a questionnaire for the students of biomedical laboratory science who had just finished their microbiology study module. All of those who gave their opinion on the study material agreed that it will be a useful addition to the studies of microbiology.
