Chronic wounds are becoming more common because of aging and life expectancy is getting higher especially in the western countries because of diabetes and obesity. Long term wounds overload the healthcare and cause remarkable costs to individual's and to the society. Most of the chronic leg ulcers are originated because of a vein hypofunction.

This thesis was produced by functional way and it consists of the functional part and the written report. The meaning of the thesis was to tell what a chronic leg ulcer is and to teach how to care it being based on the latest, researched knowledge. The aim was to create a video for teaching material. Subscriber of the thesis was the Oulu university of applied sciences and the target group was nursing students. The aim was to increase the knowledge of nursing students in caring chronic venous wounds.

The theory knowledge of the thesis consisted of the newest care recommendations and research. Based on that knowledge we made a script, filmed a video and edited it. Our co-operation partner was Steripolar Oy from who we got the wound care products and the fake skin in which we made up a wound. On the video we tell about wound care and then show how to treat a wound in practice. We tell how to check out the wound, how to clean it mechanically, how to choose the right wound care product and how to use it. In the end of the video we show how to apply support bonds to the legs in the right way. The thesis is made by functional way but we used also exploratory aspect in our work. We gathered feedback from our video by investigation form from nursing students. The results are mentioned in our report.

As a progress idea for the future the video could be extended to other wound types also. There is only a few research about how nurse students experience their knowledge of a wound care. We however wound some investigations that point out how nursing students need more teaching of wound care, especially in hard chronic wound care. The topic could be surveyed more about what kind of teaching nursing students would need.
